Comments: Hi Preston, I was lucky enough to catch you at Bad Bobs in London the other week and I felt compelled to email you and tell you that I have never experienced such an amazing talent as your guitar playing. I was blown away! You are truly a genius with the guitar and listening to you gave me goosebumps. I think MG is right in saying that exposure on Later would be great for you. I will also be emailing the show to tell them this and I would urge any other posters to do the same. Best wishes Charmaine xx

Comments: Stevie and other message board contributors, I'm deeply moved and gratified by your kind words. When I realize through reading your feedback that I have reached real people with my music, it makes all of this worth doing. I am always grateful for any support you can give and/or ideas or suggestions you may have. Thank you so much for caring enough to contribute to this message board. MG in particular, thank you for your "call to action". Yes, I would love the opportunity to share my music with a wider audience and would be thrilled to appear on Jools Holland. Anything can do to help make that happen would be greatly appreciated.

Comments: I think it is high time that this wonderful guitarest was taken to a wider audience. I have e-mailed the Jools Holland show (www.bbc.co.uk/later) to suggest that Preston be given some exposure on the show. I can't remember ever seeing a musician with such an idiosyncratic style, technical skill and the crucial ability to apply a bit of passion to music. There just aren't enough places in Britain to showcase this type of genuine music (i.e. not rock, nu-metal, garage, hardcore, R n B etc). Preston needs a bigger audience. Anyone who's seen him, please e-mail the show.

Comments: Hi Preston. You were great (again) at Henry's Jazz Bar on 26th. I've been listening to the album Handwritten Notes non stop since then and it's brilliant! I thought it might not have the same appeal as the live gig, with not being able to see the guitar technique but I was wrong about that. Every song is completely individual and really well composed. I can visualise the Scottish Highlands in "Crossing the River", Italian villages in "Love in the Old Country" (my personal favourite), and some kind of Swamp Monster in "Nightride"! I'll be keeping an eye open for your next Edinburgh gig. Thanks for some great music.

Comments: I saw you on 26sept'02 at 'Hennrys jazz bar' in Edinburgh.

I was the guy that spoke to you in the toilets(not the best place to speak to someone) and told you that I was into Electronic Dance music. I thought that was a real dumb thing to say to an acoustic guitarist but what I was trying to say was that your music or more your style of playing totaly blew me away. I just wanted you to know that your music had maybe a wider appeal than you might have thought. Truly AWSOME

I saw you when I was in like 9th grade or something. You played in Toledo, OH at Toledo University with Daniel Stevenson. It was truly amazing how you play guitar. I couldn't believe it, but I was watching it the entire time.

Bravo, Bravo!! I remember the song "Metal" and "Hansel's Saw" the most because of their diversity amongst the others. Kicked ass, man!!

Comments: I caught your act last night. I think you are very talented but either I saw you at a down time or I am missing something. I sure do expect to hear great things about you because talent like yours just doesn't go unnoticed. I hope you will connect more with the audience....like at least say hi when you first come out on stage and that you will experiment with other forms of music....adding of course your own unique twist. Best wishes.

Comments: WOW! Until 9/12/02, I hadn't even hear of you but listening to an afternoon program on WNCW radio from western NC, I heard you play several songs while in the studio. The announcer mentioned you'd be playing in Maryville TN on Saturday night and I thought, well I should go hear this guy, so tonight I did. Your playing is terrific. I can't classify it -- rock? funk? blues? jazz? -- some of each I guess but it's really great. I'm telling my friends and coworkers to buy your CD's too. But listening to you, while great, is not as good as seeing you play in that amazing style. Glad to see you're coming back to Steve Kaufman's camp next June. Keep it up.

Comments: Hi Preston. I just wanted to stop by and let you know that you have been a real inspiration for me. I saw you perform a clinic for Washburn guitars way back in 1995 in Topeka, KS. After I saw you that night, my whole direction in music was changed. I've learned alot from you and wanted to say thanks for the inspiration and insight. It changed my life. It lead me to 3rd place last year in the National Fingerstyle Guitar Championships!

Take care,

Comments: Todd,

Thanks for your message. I recently started using the AER Compact 60 at gigs around the U.K. and really like it. I would recommend it over any small acoustic amp on the market. It reproduces my guitar sound with warmth, clarity and accuracy. It is virtually noise-free.

It has an amazingly big sound for its size and weight. It is easy to tote around with a gig bag. It sets up in seconds, is simple to use and has a great sounding reverb. As with many German products, you may be paying more, but you get what you pay for...quality, innovative design, reliability etc. I now have more control over my sound in every performing situation thanks to this little amp.

Comments: Preston,

I noticed that you are now using the AER amp, and wondered how you like it compared to the Ultrasound AG -100. Don't worry, I'm not affiliated with either company, but I will probably buy the Ultrasound since I can't find anything that sounds better in the under $1000.00 price range. I notice that Don Ross has also switched to the acousticube. Are they better for the kick-butt fingerstyle stuff?

By the way, you rock!

Peace,

Todd K.

Comments: Preston,

I would like to thank you for opening up a whole new world of playing. I have been playing the Guitar for about 5 years now and around a year or so ago a friend of mine showed me the video of you at Cafe Milano. I was astounded to say the least. We must have watched that video about 4 times all the way through before I could even try and get out of my seat. After we watched that he pulled out another video and put it in, It was your Instructional video off of Homespun. Needless to say I borrowed it from him and tried to convince myself i could play like you. Well after about 4 hours I got down 1.10 secs of Slap Funk hahaha. I'm still a year later trying to get down the fingerpicking parts for it. I would like to thank you again for showing there is alway more you can do with a Guitar. I am surprised that none of the churches around have labeled it a sin to listen to your music because your playing skills are greatly coveted hahaha.

Comments: Hello;

I have an 1984 collectors series Ovation that I love to use to play Preston's music. I noticed that on Preston's concert video that some of the holes above the fretboard were filled on his Ovation with something so it would be easier to do percussion. What is he using to fill the holes and is it permanent.... Thanks

Comments: I've been a Preston Reed fan for about 10 years now and have been monitoring this message board for a couple of months and am anxious to purchase a copy of the music book that's coming out. I've done a couple of transcriptions for some of his fingerpicking songs such as "A Day at the Races", "Chop till you drop" and "Accufuse" but I'd like to see how the "Over the neck" and some of the percussion for songs like Ladies Night and Slap Funk is transcribed.

Does anyone know who is transcribing the songs? Is it Preston himself?

PS. Love to see Preston in Winnipeg, Canada sometime.

Thoroughly enjoyed (understatement) the concert. Just when I thought there could never be a new dimension to the art of accoustic guitar playing ... You proved me wrong. Comments: Hi Preston,

I met you at Shubbas in Chicago earlier this yearafter the show. (Buy the way, your performance wasincredible. The friend I brought along is true PrestonReed fan now.) You were being pulled away (literally)before I could ask you a question about your guitar.

Here is my problem. When I'm using the tuning CGDGADI get a buzz out of the CG strings. Has this or doesthis happen to you? And how did you or Ovation solvethe problem?

Here is what I've tried so far:

*recrowned the frets

*raised the action up, way more than normal

*I use medium strings, and if I go light I would think

it would be even more buzzing

*I've tried other guitars, (even Ovation) same buzzing

There is not much buzzing at all when I tune up allthe strings a whole step (DAEABE) but I really likethe deep tones from your tuning and hope not tochange.

Please help if you have any thoughts or suggestions.

Where the heck is your tab book? I'm hoping you'll have some of your older fingerpicking staff in there like Accufuse and The Wirewhip. The slappin' stuff is too hard on my guitar finish.

Cheers,

Comments: Hello Preston,

I still remember 3 yrs ago,I watched the video "All Star Guitar Night"and saw your performence, the only word I can describe my feeling is--"shocked"! I deeply want to learn this kind of skills, so I bought your personnal video (both concert & instructional video) Wow~it really cost a lot to mail a video tape from US to Asia. But it's priceless to me.Because of the video,I can play "Tribes" & "Slap Funk" now. Will you publish any transcription or new video?

I hunger for learning more AMAZING songs~especially "Blasting Cap" Last summer,I went UC Berkely to learn English.I was eager that I can see your performence in Healdsbug Guitar Festval and buy more CD,Video, etc. But I had not get Driver's license then, so I gave up.What a pity.....

The best agent in Taiwan is "AGTM"-Acoustic GuiTar Music club, I'm the memeber, too. We invited Steaven King, Don Ross, Peter Finger, Isato Nakagawa before. You can mail to agtm@ms12.hinet.net, the leader

Mr.Huang. Hope you can come Here

ALL THE BEST,

Bryan

Name: Preston Reed

Comments: I used to sing. It's true. Don't tell anyone! It was the only way I could get gigs back in the seventies, before the new genre of solo acoustic guitar had been recognized for what it is. I played/sang several original tunes, as well as blues tunes learned mostly from the first Hot Tuna record.

The title of the tune you are talking about is "French Wine Blues". It was intended as a wry wink at my wife at the time, who was a wine lover.

Comments: Hi all-

Way, Way back I saw a taped performance of Preston Reed on WGBY - public television in Springfield, MA. The thing I remember most is that Preston performed a song with vocals! Something about varieties of wine for various romantic uses. Does this ring a bell for anyone?

Was that song ever recorded?

Comments: Hi Preston!

A few years back I stopped playing guitar because of the usual band problems. I suppose I got feed up with the whole scene. Looking back I wasn't a very happy person. Then one day I was flipping through a HomeSpun catalog and came across your video. The discription (expanding the realm of acoustic playing) is what really caught my attention. It seemed inspiring and I certainly needed that. Ofcourse like so many of your fans the first time they saw you, I was in awe to say the least. Infact I'm still in awe every time I put on one of your CDs.

It's been a couple years since then and I got one CD recorded, another on the way, lots of shows and I'm a happier person because of it. Thanks for the endless inspiration Preston!

Comments: When is the book coming out? I've been waiting a couple years for some good transcriptions of Preston's music to come out but nothing ever shows up. I saw Accufuse in the Mel Bay book and its a good job but there are some errant bars in it, otherwise its very accurate. I would guess it was missed in the printing process or something, but no matter. Love that tune. I'd like to see some accessible tunes as well as some of the more challenging pieces for a good mix. A dozen or so tunes would be a good starting point! I'm not much interested in the old stuff though but any Preston is better than no Preston!

I have been playing and teaching professionally for several years and it was really a pleasure being on the "other side" watching a pro at work(not to mention learning a bit of a special style).

Preston, once again, thanks for your generosity.By the way, I'm really enjoying the new CD . Each one is better than the last.

I decided to pick up his new CD as an afterthought, and after listening to the first few tracks, I was extremely disappointed that I didn't make a more concerted effort to see him live when I had the chance. I could use all the cliches the critics use to try to describe the listening experience, but in the end, anyone interested in the art-form will realize who Preston really is.
